The Exeter is an Oakside Classic Clocks ‘Limited Edition’ design; it is in the style of an original by French, The Royal Exchange - London, circa 1800.

The Exeter is an Oakside classic clocks LIMITED EDITION Grandmother Clock and only ten will be built annually! It is the partner of the Devon & York Grandfather Clocks.

The Cabinet - We build the Exeter Grandmother clock in Solid - Mahogany, Walnut, Cherry and Oak - you may specify a natural, medium or dark finish – The cabinet is hand-sanded to a fine finish and we then apply five coats of Hard Lacquer, this is allowed to harden before we polish the clock to a beautiful satin sheen. The cabinet is fully glazed, including bevelled glass to the sides - so that you can observe the workings of the superb movement as it plays the melodies and the calming swing of the pendulum. If you prefer a truly period look, we can fit solid timber panels instead of the glass although, we do recommend glass in the top side panels so that you can view the movement in action -it is also very satisfying to watch the pendulum swinging behind the glazed door!

The Movement - The Kieninger KSU52 movement plays three melodies - Westminster, Whittington and St Michael on a twelve-rod gong – it has an Automatic melody sequencing mechanism that plays each melody for one hour and then changes to the next! To ensure accurate time keeping the movement has a Graham dead-beat escapement (invented by George Graham FRS 1674 – 1751), this impulses the Temperature Compensating Pendulum (invented by John Harrison of Longitude fame 1693 – 1776) and as with all superior clock movements, the time drive is fitted with a maintaining power mechanism to drive the pendulum while the weights are being re-wound. There is an automatic device fitted to ensure an equal sounding tick. The polished brass drive weights are suspended on cables and have traditional crank key winding through the dial – it is the gravitational pull on the weights that provides the power to drive the Chimes the Pendulum and the Melodies. A Maltese Cross mechanism is fitted to prevent accidental over-winding.

We fit the Temperature Compensating Pendulum as standard but you may specify a small Lyre pendulum with a 220mm Brass bob!

The Dials - We offer three different custom made solid brass dials for the Exeter. Option one is polished brass with a silver Chapter and raised brass Roman numerals, an etched centre disk with a seconds dial and cast brass spandrels Option two is polished brass with a silver Chapter and raised brass Arabic numerals, an etched centre disk with a seconds dial and cast brass spandrels Option three is Traditional 1850s White Dial with black Roman & Arabic numerals and it is hand decorated by our artist.

The Dial Selectors - There are two levers on the Dial; they control the Chimes and the Automatic sequencing of the three melodies - Westminster, Whittington and St. Michael, which play on a twelve-rod gong. You can select automatic night shut-off between 22:15 and 07:15 to silence the striking mechanisms.

Manufacturing quality shows in every Kieninger movement. All movement plates are made of a special brass alloy that is hard and has a high tensile strength. The holes for the journals are reamed and smoothed after lacquering and then receive an oil sink. Pinions are made of high-quality steel or stainless steel. Fast turning pinions are hardened. All journals are roller burnished in a special process. The HTU and HSU movements feature thirty-two bronze-bushings and twelve jewels in critical positions. The gears are made of very tough and hard brass alloy with a tensile strength of 62 kp/mm². A high level of corrosion protection for all components is assured. Brass components are pickled and receive a coat of clear lacquer. Steel components are made from stainless steel or receive a galvanic nickel coating. Each movement also has a laser engraved serial number.
