The Hampshire Grandfather Clock

Photograph of the Hampshire Grandfather Clock (in Mahogany) - an Oakside Classic Clocks original design.

The Hampshire is a 20th century 'original design' by Oakside Classic Clocks.

The Hampshire Grandfather is a modern design by Oakside - it was Franks first clock design and continues to be a firm favorite - it is the partner of the Winchester Grandfather Clock and the Lymington Grandmother Clock.

The Cabinet – The Hampshire is built in Solid Oak, Walnut and Cherry, we also have a small quantity of Brazilian Mahogany but when its gone we will no longer offer Mahogany as a build choice! You may specify a natural, medium or dark finish on the Oak! The cabinet has toughened glass to the pendulum door and bevelled glass to the side panels – The cabinet is hand-sanded to a fine finish and we then apply five coats of Hard Lacquer, this is allowed to harden before we polish the clock to a beautiful satin sheen. Traditional, longcase clocks had solid timber panels in the pendulum door and in the side panels - we can build your clock with any combination of glass and solid panels, although we do recommend glass in the top side panels so that you can view the movement in action and it is also very satisfying to be able to watch the pendulum swinging, behind the glazed door!

The Dials - There are two solid brass moon phase dials to choose from. All dials have two selection levers, these controls the Hour Chimes and the three melodies Westminster, Whittington & St. Michael. The lever on the left controls the chimes and provides the options of Silent, Automatic Night Off (22-15 and 07.15) or continuous Chiming. The lever on the right allows you to select Melody Silent, A choice of the three melodies or Automatic Sequencing of the melodies!

Option one is polished brass with a silver chapter ring and Roman raised brass numerals - it has an etched centre disk with a subsidiary second’s dial and cast brass corners spandrels. Option two is polished brass with a silver chapter ring and Arabic raised brass numerals - it has an etched centre disk with a subsidiary seconds dial and cast brass corners spandrels.

All dials have two selection levers, these controls the Hour Chimes and the three melodies Westminster, Whittington & St. Michael. The lever on the left controls the chimes and provides Silent, Automatic Night Off (22-15 and 07.15) and Continuous Chiming. The lever on the right selects allows you to select Silent, any of the three melodies or Automatic Sequencing!

The Movement Options – The Hampshire Grandfather Clock is fitted with the superb Kieninger KSU 50 8-day, Automatic melody sequencing, weight driven movement as standard. This movement plays its melodies of 12 gong rods!

We now offer the Kieninger KSU63 8-day movement as an option for the Hampshire. This movement plays three melodies Westminster, Whittington and St Michael on a sixteen-rod gong!

Manufacturing quality shows in every Kieninger movement. All movement plates are made of a special brass alloy that is hard and has a high tensile strength. The holes for the journals are reamed and smoothed after lacquering and then receive an oil sink. Pinions are made of high-quality steel or stainless steel. Fast turning pinions are hardened. All journals are roller burnished in a special process. The HTU and HSU movements feature thirty-two bronze-bushings and twelve jewels in critical positions. The gears are made of very tough and hard brass alloy with a tensile strength of 62 kp/mm². A high level of corrosion protection for all components is assured. Brass components are pickled and receive a coat of clear lacquer. Steel components are made from stainless steel or receive a galvanic nickel coating. Each movement also has a laser engraved serial number.

The power to the clock movement is provided by the gravitational effect acting on the weights – this effort is regulated by the combined actions of the Graham dead-beat escapement (invented by George Graham FRS 1674 – 1751) and the swing of the Pendulum – together providing excellent time-keeping! To assist in maintaining accurate time, all superior clock movements have a maintaining power mechanism – this drives the pendulum while the weights are being re-wound, a device is also fitted to automatically provide an equal sounding tick and a Maltese Cross mechanism to prevent accidental over-winding.

The Pendulums – The Hampshire is fitted with a Large Lyre Pendulum with a 270mm diameter polished Bob – you may also specify a Large Lyre Pendulum with etched décor on the Bob; the etched décor available on the pendulum is matched on the weight shells. The most popular option however is the technically superior Temperature Compensating Pendulum (invented by John Harrison of Longitude fame 1693 – 1776).

Weight Shells. There are three polished brass weight shells; it is the gravitational pull on the weighs that provides the power to drive the pendulum, Chimes and the Melodies.
