The August Tasche Vienna Regulator
An Oakside Classic Clocks reproduction of an original Vienna Regulator made by August Tasche, circa 1850.
This Oakside reproduction of a Biedermeier period Vienna Regulator is in the style of an original by August Tasche of Wein - who is recorded as working in Vienna between 1839 & 1850.
We build the Tasche Vienna clock cabinet in solid Walnut, Mahogany, Cherry and Oak, each with contrasting stringing inlays. The clock cabinet is fully glazed, with bevelled glass to the sides, top & bottom. You can specify solid timber panels instead of the glass but this is a special build option and we cannot refund a deposit when construction has commenced!
The cabinet is hand sanded to a fine finish before we apply five coats of hard lacquer – this is burnished to a very pleasing satin sheen and will only require an occasional polish – the timber will gradually acquire the patina that can only develop with age.
There are two movement options for the Tasche Vienna Regulator – option one is the Kieninger® PS 8-day mechanical movement that chimes the hours on a coiled gong - two brass weights provide the energy to drive the pendulum and to operate the chiming mechanism. Option two is the Kieninger RWS 8-day mechanical movement that plays the Westminster melody on the quarter hours and chimes the hours on an 8-rod gong. A pair of brass weights provides the motive power for the pendulum; separate spring barrels drive the melody and chimes.
There are two dial options – the traditional 20cm White Vienna dial has centrally mounted hour and minute hands and a subsidiary dial showing seconds. The White 20cm Regulator dial has a central minute hand and two subsidiary dials showing hours and seconds.
We fit the brass grid pendulum as standard but you may specify either the Temperature Compensating Pendulum or the traditional English timber pendulum; all pendulums have a 140mm polished brass bob.
The PS movement has automatic night silencing.
The RWS movement has automatic night silencing with both the Vienna and the Regulator dials.
We fully expect every Oakside longcase clock to become a family heirloom – passing through many generations - we therefore take great care, to ensure that every part of the clock is built to the highest possible standards, using the finest mechanical clock movements, workmanship and materials!
Manufacturing quality shows in every Kieninger movement. All movement plates are made of a special brass alloy that is hard and has a high tensile strength. The holes for the journals are reamed and smoothed after lacquering and then receive an oil sink. Pinions are made of high-quality steel or stainless steel. Fast turning pinions are hardened. All journals are roller burnished in a special process. The HTU and HSU movements feature thirty-two bronze-bushings and twelve jewels in critical positions. The gears are made of very tough and hard brass alloy with a tensile strength of 62 kp/mm². A high level of corrosion protection for all components is assured. Brass components are pickled and receive a coat of clear lacquer. Steel components are made from stainless steel or receive a galvanic nickel coating. Each movement also has a laser engraved serial number.
